Caroline Garcia holds off Ukrainian teenager Marta Kostyuk in Stuttgart

Caroline Garcia followed up her impressive win against Maria Sharapova with another three-set victory against 15-year-old Ukrainian sensation Marta Kostyuk by the scoreline of 6-1 3-6 7-5 in one hour and 41 minutes to get through to the quarter finals at the Porsche Indoor Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

The world number 7 French player dropped just one point and broke twice in the second and fourth games to close out the first set in 30 minutes. Kostyuk, who made a major breakthrough when she reached the third round at last January’s Australian Open at the age of 15, broke serve in the fourth game and held serve in the seventh game after saving three break points to build up a 5-2 lead in the second set. The Ukrainian teenager held her serve in the final game to force the match to the decider.

Garcia converted the only break point of the third set in the 12th game at 30 to seal the win setting up a quarter final against number 3 seed Elina Svitolina or 18-year-old Marketa Vondrousova.

Pliskova battles past Veronika Kudermetova:

Karolina Pliskova battled past world number 193 Veronika Kudermetova 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to set up a quarter final against last year’s Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko. Kudermetova forced the first game to deuce. Pliskova earned a break point in the second game but the 21-year-old Russian player saved it. The set went on serve until the seventh game, when Kudemertova was the first to break serve, but Pliskova broke straight back in the next game. Pliskova earned two set points on return, but Kudemertova held her serve with an ace forcing the first set to a tie-break. Kudemertova took a 4-3 lead, but Pliskova reeled off four consecutive points to win the breaker 7-4.

Kudemertova received treatment on her left thigh after the first set. Pliskova went up a 0-40 lead on return in the third game of the second set and broke serve on her third opportunity. The Czech player went down 15-40 on her serve in the eighth game and faced two break points. She fended them off and saved a third opportunity to build up a 5-3 lead. Pliskova sealed the win with another break in the ninth game.
