Earlier Cricket Australia XI resumed the day with a score of 249 for nine but they could add just one more run to the total with Harry Conway (1) dismissed by Stuart Broad (2-33).

England openers got the team off to a promising start with Cook (70) and Stoneman (111) adding 172 run opening stand to lay a solid platform.

This was also Stoneman's fourth consecutive 50+ score in the tour after managing 85, 61 and 51 in the last three innings respectively.

Stoneman was aggressive among the two with Cook being solid at the other end.

Matthew Short (1-57), who scored a half-century on day one provided the initial breakthrough when he accounted for Cook in the 42nd over.

James Vince (26) looked positive during his 38 ball knock but was the only batsman to miss out with Daniel Fallins (2-71) removing him.

Stoneman went on to complete a fine century before Fallins held a return catch to dismiss him.

However, there was no further respite for the CA XI bowlers as Root (62 not out) and Malan (57 not out) with their unbeaten 120 run stand stretched their lead to 87 runs with both the players crossing their respective half-centuries.
