Tom Brady already is the GOAT of the NFL. He just got a little greater in eSports as the cover athlete for Madden NFL 18.
For the first time in his illustrious career, fresh off his fifth Super Bowl ring, Brady will see his image grace the front of EA Sports' iconic NFL video game.
So the question is this: Why Brady now, after all these years, and without a fan vote?
With the introduction of a "G.O.A.T. Edition" for Madden NFL 18, Brady was the natural and ideal partner for EA.
"Up until last year, fans voted on the cover athlete," Josh Rabenovets, senior director of global product marketing at Electronic Arts (EA), told Sporting News. "However, we decided the cover athlete should be more than just on the cover. Rather, with ample lead time we can offer a much deeper, integrated experience in collaboration with our cover athlete.
"Tom Brady exemplifies the two primary attributes Madden seeks in a cover athlete: elite on-field performance and brand fit. Further, he embodies the innovation and storyline for Madden NFL 18."
As you would expect from the GOAT, the Patriots quarterback also spits on the notion there's a real-life "Madden curse" still attached to the virtual accolade.
Said Brady, via EA's release: "The Madden NFL 18 cover is a great honor for me. Especially since I have been playing the game since growing up next to EA headquarters in the Bay Area.
"I'm not one to believe in curses, so I'm ready to take the challenge head on like always! It doesn't stand a chance!"
