Kentucky Derby 2017 post positions: Classic Empire new favorite after draw

The field for the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby is set after Wednesday's important post-position draw at Churchill Downs.

The 20-horse field is the largest of the Triple Crown races, meaning a bad draw (along the rail) can make the 1 1/4-mile race very difficult for even the most talented horses and jockeys.

Always Dreaming (post-position No. 5) entered the drawing as the race favorite but dropped behind Classic Empire, who drew gate position No. 14. Classic Empire is listed at 4-1 odds, following by Always Dreaming (5-1) and McCraken (5-1).

Experienced trainer Todd Pletcher, who will also saddle Always Dreaming and Tapwrit in Saturday's Run for the Roses, also has an emerging fan-favorite in Patch, a horse with one eye. Patch, who placed second in the Louisiana Derby on April 1, will start from position No. 20 as he looks to give Pletcher his second Kentucky Derby win.

The "winner" of unlucky No. 17, which has no wins in the history of the Kentucky Derby, went to Irish War Cry, who entered Wednesday's drawing as one of the favorites. He's now listed at 6-1.
