Tiger Woods won’t play in the British Open

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the British Open at Royal Troon, organizers said Friday.

The news comes as little surprise. Woods, who is 40 years old, hasn't played since the Wyndham Championship last August as he fights a back injury and recovers from surgery.

He tied for ninth at the British Open in 2004, the last time it was at Royal Troon. But even if he had been able to return, expectations would have been low. He missed the cut in four of the last five majors he played.

This year's British Open starts July 14.
